Helicopter Ride

One of the people Josh met in Johannesburg owns a helicopter and he offered to take Josh for a ride over the city before he left. Josh took him up on his offer one of his last days in South Africa. The pictures from the helicopter didn't turn out the best, but Josh had a ton of fun.

Rugby Game

Rugby is huge in South Africa so Josh went to a few games while he was there. Sometimes the fans can get a little out of control - in the first picture you can see a moat behind Josh (they didn't fill it with water for this game) then a fence with spikes on top to keep the fans off the field.

Boerewors Rolls

On the way to the game reserve Josh and the guy he went with stopped at a little shack on the side of the road to pick up some boerewors rolls. A boerewors roll is like an African bratwurst with a tomato and onion sauce, barbecue sauce and butter in a baguette. Josh said it was delicious!

Game Reserve

While in South Africa Josh went to a game reserve a couple hours from where he was staying. For the most part they were able to drive around and take pictures of the free roaming animals.

These caged lions actually ate the owner last year. They would feed the lions every Sunday, and one Saturday the owner was driving through on a tractor and the lions tore him off and ate him!

Here are some white lions. I never knew they existed until Josh showed me these pictures.

Braai

The word braai is Afrikaans for barbecue. The people Josh stayed with had a few braais while he was there. Here are a couple pictures of the food they cooked up for for him.

Superbike Tour

While in South Africa Josh went to the superbike tour. He was given this shirt and hat and was able to sit really close to the track. He had a ton of fun and saw a couple bikes go down in front of where he was sitting.

Home From South Africa

After working for a law firm in South Africa for a month, and 30 hours of traveling, Josh finally made it home last Friday. He was pretty anxious to get back, but upon arriving at the airport discovered his flight to Amsterdam was canceled. They had scheduled him on a flight that left two hours earlier, but called his cell phone (which was in Utah) to let him know - 2 1/2 hours before the flight was supposed to leave. Yeah...he didn't get the message. The rescheduled flight left the next day but was delayed for a couple hours due to someone having a heart attack just before the plane took off, so he missed his connecting flight in Washington DC. He ended up having to fly to San Francisco then to Salt Lake City. Josh was one of the last people to board the plane for San Francisco and had to check his carry on (pictured below). When Josh got back to Salt Lake and was getting his luggage, his carry on was no where to be found. Josh made phone call after phone call trying to locate his bag. He had to describe the bag repeatedly! How difficult can it really be to find a bag like this? It isn't your typical piece of luggage. Finally the bag was located (apparently the tag was torn off) and delivered to our home a couple days after Josh got home. Needless to say is Josh is not planning on flying any time soon!
